Aaaaaand … scene.

Dear Bleeders,

Unfortunately, your suspicions are correct. Syfy has canceled Blood Drive after one season.

If this news makes you angry or sad, you’re not alone.

I found out not too long ago, but have been trying to think of a way to tell you guys since I felt it was up to me to let the fans know.

Ultimately I decided to wait until after the final episode aired so the news did not taint your experience. It simply didn’t seem right to burst the bubble so early, especially with how the last episode plays out. We always planned for a season two, but now that the future of the show is uncertain the final scenes seem so much more … final.

If I never get the chance to tell my version of what comes next, I’ll be incredibly sad.

But the good news is, then you can make up your own. The story is yours now, it always was from the first moment it was broadcast. If you love it, take it and play with it in your own imagination.

The future is not set, in our world or the world of Blood Drive.

As to the reasons why the show is cancelled, I’m not privy to all the details. Obviously the ratings were low, but it was also a very noisy show on social media (thanks to you guys!) and a very well-reviewed show with critics as well.

This I do know: despite canceling us, Syfy was the only network with the steel to make the show in the first place.

When the script was making the rounds I took a LOT of meetings. Every place loved to sing its praises. One major cable network flat out told me that if they’d made the show they’d make me the showrunner, give me a larger budget, and generally suck all my parts.

But guess what? They didn’t make the show, so it was easy for them to say.

It was Syfy that took the risk, and for that I’m forever grateful, even if I did get super pissy whenever I couldn’t show enough gore and dick and titties. But I’m confident they knew it was just because I’m a pervert and didn’t take it personally.

I’m bummed that Blood Drive didn’t pay off for them the way they wanted but I can’t believe we got away with a full season of the CRAZIEST show on TV.

We owe them props for making all this insanity possible.

So what about the future of Blood Drive?

Unclear. There’s definitely no season two in the immediate future, but I remain cautiously optimistic there’s more story to tell in this world. NBC|Universal owns the show so when the time comes I’ll approach them with some ideas and we’ll see what they think.

Until then, just do what Bleeders do best, share the show with others, share the #RenewBloodDrive hashtag, and generally be awesome. And enjoy season one on its own merits even if we never see more episodes.

Everyone involved in this show was amazing, too many to list them all, but if you want to track down past and future endeavors of some shockingly talented people, just IMDB the shit out of our crew. They were given incredible creative freedom so their contributions speak directly to their talents.

I try to express my gratitude online as much as possible, but it never seems enough.

All the Bleeders that have gone nuts for this show, you were the most rewarding part of a very rewarding process.

The world of Blood Drive has been in my head for over five years, and for the past two I’ve devoted the bulk of my waking hours to making it a reality. Along the way we built one of the very best crews I’ve ever worked with, from writers’ assistant (Alex!) up to showrunner (Hlavin!).

I made lifelong friends.

I got to make a show that I love so much I actually watch episodes as a fan (don’t tell anyone it makes me sound like a douchebag).

The past two years are maybe the best of my life, creatively and personally. But none of that prepared me for how incredible it was seeing the show connect with you all on a deep level.

So thank you for watching and thank you for loving and thank you for nitpicking and thank you for tweeting and thank you for bleeding for this show.

It means so damn much to every person that already bled for it (sometimes literally).

Thank you from the bottom of Heart Enterprises.

  1. I’m a film Ph.D., and I loved the show. I hope the second season lands somewhere (El Rey as others have suggested) and we get a Blu Ray/DVD with commentaries on Season One. I’m looking forward to your future work. Best of luck to you.

  2. Great show, caught the first episode after watching Roger Corman’s Death Race 2050, the premise is great. Finished watching it recently, I hope it gets a second season down the road.

    1. When the show premiered at the Overlook Festival this year, my wife bought drinks for Roger Corman and he told her he thought Blood Drive was awesome! Made my day … wait … DID MY WIFE SLEEP WITH ROGER CORMAN!?!?!?!

  3. Let me just say I loved the show. I think best chance of picking it up is the same network that has Ash Vs. The Evil Dead (Starz). The two shows seem like they could run on the same network and Blood Drive is not an old IP.

Please see what you can do to get and 2nd season or movie closer for the series.

Best show I’ve seen in a while with original characters and universe.

    1. Thank you! I’d love to be on Starz. Who knows. Right now Universal owns the show and they’re a HUGE company, so we’re starting talks with them about next steps but it’ll take a while. The good news, we made a kick ass show on a low budget and they liked working with us, so the relationship is strong. Fingers crossed!

  4. The series got better every week! Sad that it ended after one season. How, and who, could we influence a second season – since you’ve already begun writing 40 pages. The way that “good” always overcame “evil”, and the fortitude of the main characters added a good positive – but pretty raw – message in each episode. It was pretty gory at time! All the characters meshed and in the final episodes it did tie things together – that is, how they came to be what they were. Very good writing!
It would be great to have the same actors come back – but that would probably be difficult since they will have moved on to other things. The way the last episode ended was pretty intriguing.

      1. What about a movie to send it off proper…like Firefly did…but I definitely think hbo or Starz would be amazing I fell in love with this show first episode.

      2. Thanks Harry! Yeah maybe Starz. You’d think it would be a rad fucking companion piece to Ash vs. Evil Dead, but they probably don’t want to do two shows in the same vein. What a double header that would be, though!

  5. Hi! i’m a fan from italy! i followed the show cause it got fan subbed in ita. i usually hate Tv shows, but this had all i ever dreamed of(minus the soundtrack) ,ok there will be no s02 but at least season 1 has happened. i think works like blood drive work better if they have a start and an end so i’m would be cool see blood drive as a movie.any thanks for this show

      1. I’m working on a gothic, super gory, really twisted-beautiful horror show inspired by the works of Clive Barker. Hoping to pitch that early in the new year and get some sucker to buy it.

After that, have a weird sci-fi ghost idea and a spooky horror/thriller show based loosely on my life growing up. No idea if anyone will want to make them, but I’m gonna try!

  6. I discovered this show a few days ago, then I saw it was only 13 episodes, and was YAY! No more long running soup operas like TVD or Supernatural. Then I watched 2 episodes /online, iligally, I’m sorry :D/ and then I was: Fuck this, it has a great potential for 3 or 4 seasons. I want more. 13 episodes is not enough. So I checked online and I saw that it was cancelled. I cannot believe this… It it original, great cast, effects, it is funny, gory and sexy. Why it was cancelled?????

I hope at least the ending of episode 13 is descent, but nevertheless wish the creator and the rest of the team good luck in future, you have created something really mind-blowing. And maybe not this time, but the next you will succeed!

Also, the chemistry of the two main characters is perfectly touched and the actress is so hot ;x

Thanks for “Blood Drive”, sorry for the bad english, I will recommandd it to all of my friends, I hope I’ll enjoy the rest of the episodes

    Good Luck 😉

    1. Thanks for the confession! Just do me a favor and if you love it try to re-watch by legal means later on. re: cancellation, we have a VERY passionate fanbase, but the live numbers (who watched the show in the first three days) were pretty low. But the fanbase is growing with people like you that’s why views matter! Ultimately, no, we didn’t get a season two, but I consider season one a wild success artistically. I love what we made. If we never get to make another one, we’re still ahead of the game for getting season one to exist! Thank you for supporting the show.

      1. This is my favourite show of the year and it definitely left an impact. I’ll be looking forward to anything Blood Drive related in the future.

This show definitely opened me up to a brand new style I didn’t know I would enjoy, I don’t even know how to describe Blood Drive but I loved it, hope its not gone for long.

      2. Same here, what we have planned for season two doubles down on the weirdness and the pathos. I hope we can make it one day. Thanks for your support and kind words about the show, it’s means the world to me and the crew that busted their asses to get it made!

  7. What about a unrated dvd, Did they decide yet? Please give us a way to demand they give us one since they won’t bring the show back. If they are afraid of complaints let them know we are adults and should be able to watch what we want. Thanks and good luck!

    1. Hey Mark!

Currently no plans for a DVD release at all. Sucks. If the show picks up in widespread popularity over the next year, maybe, so just keep sharing the Blood Drive love! And thanks for supporting the show!

  8. I know I’m a little late in replying to this. I actually found out about the cancellation the night of the finale (right after watching it, actually, as if the ending of the show wasn’t enough of an amazing gut punch already) and it crushed me. It’s heartbreaking that something like this finally gets some air time on TV only to get taken down. It’s clear that there is so, so much passion behind this, and I can’t help but admire that. It was so clear in every episode that there was just this overwhelming LOVE and respect for grindhouse cinema behind the show, and as a longtime grindhouse fan, it couldn’t have made me happier. I think since the debut the show was the highlight of my weeks. There’s just something so damn charming about the craziness of this show.
I haven’t given up hope for a season two. I’m trying to spread the word about the show as much as I can! Feel like the bleeders owe it to you and the show for bringing it into our lives. I am hoping, praying, crossing my fingers, that this show gets some kind of second life. Really really hope that your vision gets to come to life once more. I seriously admire the hell out of you! Here’s to hoping that season 2 is, at least in some point in the future even if not the near future, on its way!

    1. Thank you so much! We really did obsess over being true to grindhouse while still making the show its own thing. So glad you caught that and appreciated it. Still working on a life for season two, until then thanks for spreading the word!

  9. I am a little late to this sad afterparty.
Blood Drive was my favorite show of the Fall season.
I sang its praises to everyone I knew, and had Blood Drive viewing parties, for the last 3 episodes.
I do try to keep up with news about shows I love, and was already hearing whispers of cancellation…so I think I kind of stuck my head in the sand, until now.
I also wasn’t aware of this blog, over which I feel equally distressed.
I only found it now, because I was searching to see if the new Syfy show “Happy” was an entrant into Syfy’s Grindhouse, leading them into a beautiful new & bloody era of television.
I was hoping to find out they decided to make a show that pushed boundaries, for each viewing season, with Blood Drive being the forerunner of awesomeness.
Instead of seeing any news of that caliber, I’m shocked to see Blood Drive was cancelled, basically before it even finished.
My heart has been ripped, still beating, from my chest, and thrown to the ground and stomped…but it is nothing compared to what you must feel.
I appreciate you and the team who brought this near perfect season of television to us, and I hope you are able to find a new home for Blood Drive, or at the very least…continue to do new work that satisfies and challenges you.

    1. Thank you Nick, so much. Yeah the “Midnight Grindhouse” part of Blood Drive was officially a part of the title page on the first script. If the show got a season two and picked up steam the idea was to use it as a banner for other shows. Basically create a night of grindhouse programming. Best laid plans …

Haven’t seen Happy yet but I hope it does well, we need more stuff like it.

      Thanks for watching!

  10. The show was amazing and I agree that slink was one of the best characters to come to along in a very long time. Maybe start a fund campaign to bring another season or a full length movie about. I have rewatched this show multiple times and leaves me wanting more. Hope we get to see more in the near future

  11. (didn’t realize how late I am to the party, wow). I binged the show over the holidays and, I say with the utmost honesty and admiration, I was WOWED. As a lifelong fan of grindhouse and hardcore sci-fi and action films, this just BLEW MY MIND. This crazy little show is amazing. I laughed, cried, gasped in delightful shock at the number of obscenities. Truly incredible!
So, you can imagine, when I found out it was canceled…it was the HUGEST bummer.
Question: is there ANY chance of a season two? Or maybe a movie? Anything like that? what can you say about the fate of the show right now?
But, whether the show gets a second life or not, thanks for bringing this craziness into my life. Think this was the best thing to come out of last year.

    1. I’m so glad you found it! Thank you for taking the time to reach out, it means a lot.

As for a season two, show producers have officially started talks with NBC|Universal about buying the show back. Don’t know how that will play out, but if it works then we’ll begin the process of shopping it around to other buyers. Hopefully we’ll know more later this year.

When I know more I’ll post it here and we’ll rally the Bleeder army to help with the next steps. Until then, share the show with as many people as you can! It’s available on iTunes.

  12. I am a bit late I know to add my two pennies worth…I downloaded the episodes of this show from sky, here in the UK. I am someone who is extremely hard to please when it comes to movies and what is on the cable networks. I’m only up to episode six, for me to get that far into the show then something must be right. The problem is I know that once I watch episode thirteen then that’s it, no more Blood drive. I have absolutely no idea why the ratings were not off the chart, it is totally unique to anything else. Maybe, the show is well ahead of its time. James Roland is understandably upset, I am too. Syfy have in my opinion made a huge mistake here by cancelling. The storylines are brilliant, the characters and actors who play them are excellent. Can you come up with a character from anywhere else who is as deviously, insane as Julian Slink? Slink reminds me of Jack Sparrow (pirates), they are worlds apart, but they are lovable characters that fit the actors so well you cannot imagine anyone else pulling it off. This is seriously going to be a massive cult classic in the future, people will be wondering why the show was cancelled in the first place. It fully deserved at the very least a second season, if not for the hard work that went into what was great viewing, then for the fans who have been denied Blood drive, a show that was so visionary, unique and worthy of a place in the hall of fame. This is a tragic decision that I hope syfy will soon be regretting…Blood Drive R.I.P.

    1. Honestly, I’ve never seen Wacky Racers but I totally see the similarities.

Hobo with a Shotgun is the reason this show exists! It was a byproduct of a fake trailer I submitted to those guys as part of a contest.

      Thanks for watching!

      1. Wow !!!,then do you meet Jason Eisener??In this case, you should make the crossover, definitely, hehe…Would be the fucking máster of the episodes,Dear Máster:)

  17. I think blood drive was excellent and you definitely need to get more seasons going I feel like had it been done by Netflix would have been viewed by a wider range and with saying that if I was you I would definitely try and get Netflix on board to get season two and more then slap the well deserved MA rating with no black bars just a thought

  18. I want to thank you for an awesome show. I loved it and thought it was ballsy doing the stuff u did. The show may have been cancelled but ur going to have a cult following for years. Ive been telling all my friends about ur show and pray it gets released on dvd.

  19. Is there any possibility ,ATM, to go on with the show for a 2nd season with other partnerships(maybe Netflix,AMC,CW,FOX?????Any news, any talks in progress?????I ve read about Colin Cunningham signing for Preacher series, congrats for him¡¡¡it will be amazinG; ,they know what a huge monster of actor they have just signed….Maybe,This fact might affect for a new season ,doesnt it?????

Encourage you,id like new chapters,it would be totally deserved,IMO¡¡¡I didnt understand why netflix and syfy dont co-produce it,there is no grindhouse airing now,and this show is brilliant¡¡¡¡ A lot of similar series produced to same targeets(again and again)(and then cancelled;,no grindhouse on the air, strange things….If these series would have been credited by Robert Rodríguez or Tarantino, all the people would be foolish, regardless of the quality, what a pitty, very unfair¡¡¡

  20. This was unexpected. I just started watching the show last week when I saw it on the SyFy website. I instantly loved it from the first scene. Only 6 episodes in and it has become one of my favorite shows. I love the story, the humor, the characters (each and every one of them) and the potential lore that can be explored. It’s unlike anything else I’ve seen. I don’t know how many more cancellations I can take at this point. It’s so aggravating, especially when you’re attached to it already.

After one season, smh. This should be adapted to novel or comic book format, something, anything!

    1. Thanks Richard! Luckily we planned to massively change the storyline each season, so season one defiantly has some closer to the bulk of the storylines. Hope you dig the finale, and when we know more about the fate of the show (working on getting the rights back so we can resell it somewhere else) we’ll be shouting it to the world. In the meantime, please share the love and let other people know about it. And thank you for taking the time to comment, it means a lot!
